Quality Control: Buying The Best & Sorting for Quality
Before drying any timbers we rigorously inspect each piece, taking many measurements to record size, and moisture content in a variety of ways. During this Pre-Sort process we track:
- Weight: calculating initial moisture content by weight is the most reliable measure of actual moisture content.
- Dimensions: measurements are recorded to 1/16" precision in order to evaluate exact shrinkage during the drying process.
Additionally, weights are measured for each full unit of stocking items, and every special order piece to allow better tracking. After the measurements are taken they are entered into our quality control program where we can watch for anomalies and maintain very detailed records about pieces, units and charges.

By starting our quality control process at the mill level, FGL is able to ensure we begin our process with high-quality, structurally sound timbers that are selected, not only for appearance, but for their eventual acceptance as Tru-Dry.
During the buying process our buyers work with the mills to ensure the timbers are cut beyond the requirements of the grade (#1/BTR), are Free of Heart Center, and meet our stringent quality requirements.
